Good post John. I'm a bit late to the party here. But I think it is clear from my studies anyway, that a lot of the plain and precious things are whole books that are missing. The Ethiopic Book of Enoch that Jude quotes from is the perfect example. Both Jews and Christians tried to eradicate this book from the canon of scripture but it survived in the Ethiopic Bible. It is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Thanks for the typo alert, Theodore. I will correct it.

I have found that my appreciation for Christ has only been strengthened because of what I have read in the Book of Mormon. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in with comments.

I think the biggest point is that what is missing from the Bible is not a mentioning of doctrine, but the plainness that the Book of Mormon has and how precious is makes those teachings.

Typo Alert! "wicked me" should be "wicked men." I hope that had I been there I would not have been jointly responsible for His death.

Excellent post, John.

There were also many “plain and precious things taken away from the book” before the time of Christ that are restored in the Book of Mormon. The words of Zenock, Neum and Zenos were very clear that the God of Abraham would yield himself, as a man, into the hands of wicked men to be crucified (1 Nephi 19:10).

If the Jews still had and believed those clear records down to the time of Christ would they have still crucified their Messiah? Maybe that is why the records were lost?

My response has always been that the Book of Mormon was never meant to provide new or missing doctrinal material (although it does have unique and illuminating insight). It's primary purpose was that of corroboration.

The central point of the entire book is found in Jacob chapter 5 (I think it's chapter 5 anyway... the one with the allegory of the olive orchard).

I could list many things that are meaningful to me, but will only say 4:
1) The Book of Mormon is blunt about the need for each person to receive personal revelation consistently. (Jarom 1:4).
2) Without ongoing miracles and angelic ministrations, all is vain (Moroni 7:37)
3) Plain teachings about the evils of economic inequity and the neglect of the poor.
4) Validity of atonement for those who did not know God's will for them, and those that sin ignorantly. (Mosiah 3:11)

You've compiled a great list. The Book of Mormon also shows that God called prophets after Christ's resurrection, both in the text of the book and how it was brought forth.
