I am sorry, I made a mistake with my question for Alexander. I should have asked: If Young had so little power how could he have 20,000 people leave their homes and move south during the planting season?

Keller,

You are correct that the historical community has shifted. I wonder if the reason this fits so well with MatMM is because Alexander was the main person for the re-writes of the new book.

Does Alexander explain, if Young had so little control how was he able to get 40,000 people to leave their homes at the most important time for the harvest and make the move south?

Alexander explains that Brigham Young had less control in private and community life than most people realize. But I wonder: how much control did he have over the territorial legislature? I think the territorial legislature could have been a factor in shaping the political landscape.

I have always appreciated Alexander as a historian. He seems to burrow into areas that are neglected by others to provide a fuller, more detailed picture of history.

Thank you for providing this summary.

I don't subscribe to The Historian, but I got to read the article when Michael brought with him while visiting last month. I thought the information went along very well with that found in the new MMM book for which I started a review here on the FAIR blog. Actually the Walker, Turley, and Leonard treatment is much more brief and concentrates on Drummond's misinformation. So Alexander's article helped fill in a hole in my knowledge.

It has been my sense that the recent trend in the Mormon historical community has been to shift more of the blame for Buchanan's Blunder onto Mormons, either in the name of balancing out previous pro-Mormon accounts or to hold the Mormon hierarchy more responsible for the reprehensible tradegy at Mountain Meadows. Alexander's article makes me a little more cautious about wholly embracing such efforts.
